Community Service?
The topic of the day is community service, why we have them, why we need to do them, where to get started and much more. Before we begin, community service is basically voluntary work intended to help the local community, the local business, or even a local neighbor. However, community service does not always have to be local. In fact, there are many nationwide organizations that allow ambitious volunteers to network and help out such as Ashoka: Innovators of the Public, Interact Club, Youtheca, and many more.
Now that we know why we have community service, let's talk about why we need to do them. There are many reasons to do volunteer work and it varies with everyone. An adult might be interested in helping out a community because they support the cause or just because it is fun.Meanwhile, a teenager or even pre-teens often do community service because of a school requirement, to become more involved, and to obtain real life experiences. Did you know during your college admission process, community service among many other factors are incorporated in their decision to either accept or reject your application? ( to find out more about college admission, check out the UCLA site http://www.admissions.ucla.edu/Prospect/Adm_fr/FrSel.htm - remember college admission requirements vary - ).
Now, let's move on to where to get started on community service. Depending on where you live, there are many great opportunities just around your neighborhood. For example, you can try your local library such as the Fairfax Branch, your local schools, your church and many more. Below are two great websites to search for volunteer opportunities.
While you check out the websites, make sure to leave your suggestions on what you want to see on the blog below in the comment section and also make sure to follow, subscribe, or check back daily for more great information!
